Yesterday we took Noah to see the Mummies exhibit at Discovery Place in Charlotte--the exhibit was great, and I'm sure we'll be going back. After the exhibit, though, we quickly ran out of time to see everything that Discovery Place had to offer.

This was one of the things that really had Noah tickled; I'm not sure what it was--they called it "dust" but I think it was iron filings with magnets that moved in sync with the music (then again, it could have been dust, though MY dust at home doesn't move like this):

We went to Gatlinburg yesterday, and had a great time--met up with Mimi, Papa & Rachel and saw lots of cool things that we'd love to come back and actually do. I did snap this video of Mimi & Noah "playing" 'Let's Go Jungle: Island of Spice' (or something along those lines). The beauty is, at his age, we don't have to put any money into the games--Noah's happy to just sit in the console and pretend. Mimi was a great sport & played along:

Then, this morning, after "Waffle Sunday," Noah decided to serenade us with some recorder music. He enlisted Patrick's help for the boom whacker part (at which point in the video you get the bonus of a dancing interlude by Patrick.).

Noah had his official winter program today; the Barnes & Noble thing was just to get the kids & the Montessori word out to the community. The program was very similar, but I tried to do longer videos. Enjoy!

Montessori was invited to Barnes & Noble to perform--to say it was controlled chaos would be an overstatement...it was just kind of...well, chaos. It was great, though, to be able to perform for the public, and I think Noah did a fantastic job. I took 9 videos, and I'm sure I may be able to consolidate them, but for now, I'll just post them here.

For most of the program, Noah was behind some other students, so look for him in the back, wearing a beige sweater & his blue fleece hat. Had I known he'd be in the back, I would have dressed him in orange. We think he did a fabulous job!

A Day at Grandad's Apple Barn

We had a spur-of-the-moment urge for apples this morning, so we zoomed up to Hendersonville. While we picked apples at Stepp's Orchard, we stopped at Grandad's Apple Barn on the way back (you can't miss it--look for the dinosaurs!). WHY they have dinosaurs, I don't know, but we're glad they did!

We had a great time looking at the dinos, the llama & the goats; we watched the "cow train" (mini cars painted to look like cows pulled by a John Deere) because Noah absolutely did NOT want to ride it; we wandered around the store; listened to a bluegrass band (and sang along to "Dooley"); and then went through the corn maze. After that, we headed home, munching on apples.

A great day was had by all! Enjoy the pics! (Oh, and please forgive some of the people in the background. I wasn't able to crop everything out...just try to focus on the incredibly cute boy in the foreground!)

It took us about an hour to go through it--there were 4 stations that you had to find throughout the maze, and I know that for about 20 minutes, we were absolutely going in a circle!

Grandad's has apples, sure; and now that it's fall, they also have pumpkins. But what about dinosaurs? Check--a raptor AND a Triceratops. What about a llama? Oh, yeah--they got a llama. I'll bet they don't have goats, though! Uh, yeah, they do--TWO of those critters. They've also got a mobile BBQ RV (smelled really amazing...beef brisket sammiches for sale!), a bluegrass band on the back patio, and a corn maze in the shape of a tractor (I wish I could cut & paste the pic from Google Earth--it was pretty cool!).

I still like Stepp's Orchard for the apples, though, to be fair, we did NOT try any of Grandad's apples. Maybe next time...

Tonight was Noah's first soccer game. EVER. And, while there was much standing and staring up at the sky, and twirling around, there were a couple times that he seemed to be running with the general pack, in the direction of the ball. The coach assured us that he's doing very well--he's the youngest on his team, and the coach said that her oldest was the same way; he's 8 and loves soccer, so we'll see. They got their shirts today--they're the Hurricanes, and tonight they swamped the Storm. Yeah, I'm gonna love soccer season...give me a chance to trot out a few new metaphors!

Today at the library, we found this neat program on one of the library's computers that allows you to color in the continents, place mountain ranges & rivers, as well as points of interest. It's got this cartoon guy in the lower left corner, "Jog," next to an open suitcase. The suitcase produces the names of the various items you're supposed to place--Africa, the Nile, the Alps, the Pyramids. So, basically, you're taking the mouse, grabbing the place names, and putting them where they belong.

I took this video--it's Noah's second time, but I was still awed.

The PARTHENON

Noah and I went to check out of Costco last night, and usually when the receipt checkers see Noah, they ask if he wants them to draw a smiley face on the receipt (which he's usually delighted by). This night, he told me he wanted them to draw the Parthenon.

We roll up to the door, and, true-to-form, the kid (who's probably NOT a kid, but he looks about 12) asks if Noah would like the smiley face. Noah says, very politely, "Could you draw the Parthenon, please?"

The kid looks at me, then at Noah, "What...????"

Noah repeats, very slowly and plainly, "The PARTHENON."

Again, a blank look from the kid, "Uh, where's that?"

Noah looks at me, and I say, "Go ahead; tell him."

"GREECE!"

No comprehension on this kid's face.

I tell him, "Just draw a square with some lines up & down."

So he does.

He hands the receipt to Noah, who remarks as we're heading to the car, and he's studying the receipt, "He didn't stay in the lines. He didn't draw a very good Parthenon."

Today was Noah's first day of Kindergarten. Since he's been at the Montessori Academy since last June, it wasn't as traumatic as it could have been (I thought I'd cry, but I was okay...I guess I got most of my crying out last June). He was a little hesitant, since he had never seen his teacher's new assistant, but I introduced them, and he was good-to-go once he walked through the school doors. I think he'll have a fabulous year, and can't wait to see what amazing things he'll learn. In fact, today he enlightened me with this fact: How can you tell an English person? They wear top hats.

These were taken a little while ago, but I found them when downloading this morning's pics, so thought I'd add them here...
Noah's got a thing for Tikis; Gymboree had a collection, Tiki Chief, that I just went crazy on when they had it marked down to super-cheap. We added the hibiscus shorts, and then of course the camo socks with the orange skull on it to complete the ensemble.

We figured that there was no use keeping all of our Lego blocks safe & secure--I mean, they're MEANT to be played with, right? So, we pulled down all the blocks we had, and Noah's been having a great time!

This is one of my favorites. Noah was building on to a ship that Patrick had created. Notice R2D2 in the hatch, and it's Lego Han Solo in Carbonite. With a bat on top of Han. I mean, where do you keep your bat?

Tonight, Noah was drawing pictures, and he drew the long, skinny shape and asked us what it was. We guessed a crayon, a long house... Noah said, "It begins with an 'E'" and drew an E. He then drew the "I." I guessed "Eiffel Tower?" He grinned really big & said, "Right!" and continued to spell the rest of it (Eifl Tour--not perfect, but you understand what he's going for...and did you get that he KNOWS that it's EIffel?? He got the "EI" for cryin' out loud.

Then Patrick asked him, "Noah, do you know where the Eiffel Tower is?"

Noah responded, "France!"

We had a great Sunday--I stirred the water in our Sea Monkey tank, and am surprised at how big they've gotten. Well, big by Sea Monkey standards, anyway. I still don't see any girl Sea Monkeys. How do you know they're girls? They're the ones wearing the bikinis. You know--like it shows on the package?

Then, Noah decided he'd use up ALL the tape in the house (no, I'm not kidding. ALL.), and would make himself into a Mummy:

Then, I plugged in our Fisher Price "My Toon TV" (it's this camera thing that you can take pictures of your face with--which he loves--and superimpose the face onto cartoon characters, which then dance around the TV screen and the camera shows Noah dancing on the TV screen, too) using the iPod for music. Noah insisted we play Halloween music. Whether this was inspired by the Mummy "outfit" or if it's just because Noah really, really, REALLY loves Halloween, I'm not sure. So, this is him dancing around, having lots of fun:

I thought I'd change the banner--the picture is one that Noah crafted, with crayon, construction paper and foam Christmas stickers (he LOVES those things!). It's a picture he drew for Patrick, and even went so far as to put it behind Patrick's sink in our bathroom. It's snowing, and he dressed the snowman and the reindeer in appropriate winter gear, and if you notice, he even drew the blue sky above.

I've been slacking on the whole "snap of pic of Noah as we're heading out so people can see what he's wearing today" but the past couple days, he's been coming up with some great outfits. My policy is: If it's clean, I don't really care what he wears or in what combination. I try to keep the really out-of-season stuff put away so we don't have to have an issue with why he can't wear his swimsuit in 40 degree weather, so really, everything is fair game!

I also wanted to put in a few shots of our Christmas decorations outside. I can't wait for Santa's visit--Noah's been so excited about everything this year--the decorations, the store displays, the music and it just makes me want to just hit the pause button and soak it all up like a sponge!

I LOVE this hat & mitten set! I think you voted against getting these, but I just couldn't resist.

Noah's been a little under the weather, but we felt like he'd been cooped up in the house long enough, and as it was a gorgeous day (note the intense blue sky!), we went to the park. My everlasting thanks again to my dear friend Lori for the fabulous R2D2 hat!

Noah had a great time trick-or-treating. We pretty much stuck to our neighborhood, but hit every house that had a porch light on--so we went to about 10 or so houses, which, for a 4 1/2 little boy, he got plenty of candy! It was a nice night out--not too cold, so he didn't need his skeleton hoodie. We also had a great time doing Boo in the Zoo again this year, and I think he enjoyed seeing the other kids in costume more than the actual getting of candy.

We also stopped by Mom & Dad's to trick-or-treat and to show off our not-very-scary skeleton, and Noah had fun with Dad's Rasta wig.

After Halloween, we stopped by WalMart and snagged a Spooky House kit and we all had fun decorating it. It is my opinion, though, that the picture on the box showing you what the finished product looks like is PhotoShopped!

Tweetsie Railroad!

We headed up to Blowing Rock, NC this past weekend to check out Tweetsie Railroad. It's a great little park, been around forever (since the 50s I believe) and we thought it would be a great "next step" for Noah in the hierarchy of amusement parks (did the Fair, that was a hit; then we thought something like this, see how he does). He LOVED it. We all did--the park is a little cheesy, but we all just had a great time. Was a perfect day, weather-wise, and I'd love to go back again.

They had this giant hay bale spider that Noah was fascinated with. He doesn't seem to be freaked out at all with all the Halloween stuff--he LOVES it!

Cool baby.... Since it's a coal engine, we made sure to have eye protection!

View of the train; we were all the way in the last seats in the last car--the whistle and bell are VERY loud, and Noah was pretty sensitive to it, so we wanted to be as far away from the noise...it was quite nice in the back--not many people on the car, so we really had a chance to soak it all in.

This is the actual engine. (Okay, now that I've typed that, it seems sort of redundant...)

Noah wanted an Indian Hat, so we went to the General Store (where else?) and he picked out what is surely an exact replica of an Indian Hat.

Noah flying his green plane... We'd first come upon these at the beginning of the day. This was a ride that Mommy & Daddy couldn't do with Noah--he had to do it himself. He absolutely refused. Then, we swung by later in the day, and he was all too happy to hop in & fly, and had a fabulous time! The video Patrick posted yesterday (below) is from this ride.

Noah feeding a goat that apparently gets out quite frequently. They've got a Deer Park, though it's not as scary as the Hollywild Magical Deer Forest. For one thing, there aren't any rednecks in vehicles gunning for the deer. The other main difference is, these animals WANT you to feed them...

...like this Emu. I neglected to read the sign that said, "DO NOT HAND FEED--PLACE FOOD IN TROUGH." No...instead, I start to pour feed, from the handy dandy ice cream cone (plain, not sugar) into my hand when this guy (gal? I didn't turn it over to figure out whether it was a he or a she) just takes a chunk out of the cone. And for the record, Emus really like plain ice cream cones!

Our silly self-portrait! We were on the chair lift going back down to the main part of the park (Noah LOVED the chair lifts!) and Patrick and Noah were being Indians.

Okay, there's so much going on here. First, we have the Rudolph hat. Then we have the Indian headdress. Then, we have my fuzzy scarf that Noah was trying to put over his head to be hair--I guess for the Indian braids?

This is a shot of Patrick & Noah in the chair lift in front of me (hard to tell it's them, but it is), but I just love that you get a really great idea of the surrounding area from this photo.

And that was our day at Tweetsie Railroad! Patrick took video throughout the day, so hopefully we'll get that loaded pretty quickly!

By the way, did anyone notice Patrick's design of the new banner? New typeface, and the background is a Noah original. The crumpled texture was an afterthought, when the scanning didn't work the way Noah thought it would, and he became frustrated, and crumpled it.

Maybe it'll hang in the MOMA some day.

We did some sugar cookie decorating, and this was Noah's masterpiece!

I'm not sure if you can see it any better if you click on the photo, and sorry for the tilt, but Noah drew a face on the egg & was calling it Humpty Dumpty.

Noah drew Mickey Mouse on his visor. The large green circles in the middle are Mickey's eyes; the nose & smile are underneath the eyes, and the ears are in red, on either side of the eyes.

Okay, I had just finished putting on this very cool dragon tattoo on Noah's leg, and he started walking around saying he has a tattoo now, just like Rachel. :)

Outside, doing some coloring. I was testing his word recognition, so that's what you see on the paper. I was using colors. Then I was afraid he was seeing me use the blue crayon, and just saying the color based on whatever crayon I was using. So I mixed it up--I wrote orange with the yellow crayon, violet with the orange crayon...he got 'em all.

Oh, and he was readng them upside-down.

Amazing.

Noah's Birthday Present is DONE!

Patrick and I had decided that, if we had the opportunity, we'd love to be able to get Noah a really nice play set for his 4th birthday. Well, we both worked very hard, I had some unexpected closings, and we were able to do it.

We SO APPRECIATE everyone who contributed to this amazing gift, and I'm sure you can see, Noah really, really enjoyed his birthday present!

We had hoped that he'd be able to play on it ON his birthday, but as it took 2 professional builders close to 16 hours to put it up, I guess it's good that he was able to play on it as soon as this weekend!

Again, thank you so much to everyone who went in with us on this amazing gift--it may be a once-in-a-lifetime gift, and I really think that it'll be something that he remembers for a long, long time!

Yeah, it's big...the tower is 3 stories high (not FULL stories, but kid-sized, and still pretty darn tall. You can absolutely see it over our privacy fence!)

Noah climbing down from the 2nd level to the 1st level. The slide & rock wall are behind him, they are attached at the 2nd level. Behind the slide is the ladder leading up to the 3rd level. It's pretty amazing, and yes, I've been all around on it, and that sucker is sturdy!

Noah on the dual-swing. You can either swing by yourself, or have a friend swing with you facing the opposite direction.

I see you! Noah promptly removed the telescope from its perch and brought it down with him. There's also a steering wheel on the 3rd level. Hopefully he won't figure out how to remove THAT, too.

Noah wanted to take his Tonka truck on the play set. He pretty much got it on the first level by himself. Needed help getting it to the second level, and then I was suckered into carrying it to the 3rd level. We played up there for awhile, then he decided that the Tonka truck needed to go down the slide. Which it did. Luckily, both the slide and the Tonka truck are just fine. And FYI--the slide is pretty fun!

Bithday fun and First Day of School!

Our birthday boy! I can't believe he's 4...

First day of Montessori School! Even though he's just doing their Summer Camp, it's Monday through Friday (his previous school was Mon - Thurs), and drop off is 7:30 - 8:30 and pick up is 2:30... So, not only is he going one more day than he had been, it's potentially 3 hours more than he's used to. Hey, it's just like REAL SCHOOL!!!!

Noah did great this morning--a little scared, but he did a great job. The Director called us after he'd been in class and told us that once he got in the classroom, he was fine. She also sent us an e-mail update to let us know that he was really enjoying Art class, so we know that Noah's going to have a great time.

Mommy & Daddy? Well....it was a little harder for us, and yes, I cried a little. We know that he'll love this environment, and we know that it's good to be challenged and to try new things, even though they scare us. Still, that doesn't mean that Mommy can't be a little sad!
